Caution on roads emphasized
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Law enforcement stepping up enforcement during holidays
Be careful on the roads.
Texas Department of Public Safety troopers want to relay that message with Christmas and New Year's approaching. DPS troopers will be out in force to look for drunken drivers, seat belt violators and speeders. According to the DPS, tickets and arrests double during holiday enforcement.
"Most traffic deaths are preventable, and we feel our efforts will make the holidays just a bit safer," interim DPS director Stanley Clark said.
Odessa Police Department media relations officer Sherrie Carruth said officers will be out locally.
"We've been stepping up patrols since November," Carruth said.
Over at the Ector County Sheriff's Office, Sgt. Debbie Bruce said deputies will also have a more visible presence.
"We always do so in the evening hours and then on New Year's Eve," Bruce said.
TxDOT public information officer Glen Larum said those leaving for the holidays should perform routine vehicle maintenance like checking oil and also look into the weather during the trip. TxDOT provides information on construction and road conditions through a hot line and its website. Larum said those on the roads should be extremely careful.
"There are a lot of people traveling. You need to give plenty of time to reach your destination and take breaks," Larum said.
Officials also say people should be careful when out shopping or away from home during the holidays. Many lose Christmas presents to thieves when the gifts sit visible in cars.
"Take precautions," Carruth said.
