UTPB students move on campus and plan events

The resident assistants at UTPB are doing something a little different this year to build a stronger community on campus.

They will now be in charge of planning monthly student housing activities to become more acquainted with other students on campus, UTPB resident assistant Megan Lopez said.

This is Lopez's first year to be an RA.

She said this is also the first year every RA will be responsible for planning an event once a month. They will be staggered, which means there will be an event available to students every week.

An RA plans events for his or her own housing area, but the event is open to all students. There will be everything from poker month to movie night to volleyball tournaments.

Lopez said she doesn't know a lot of people on campus, but living on campus has been a great way for her to make friends.

"It has made a huge difference," she said.

There are several planned events that will include the whole campus - a cookout and a slip and slide will kick off the new school year, Lopez said.

This fall there will be a campus-wide Halloween Party and a Thanksgiving dinner, she said.

Romey Equezabel lived on campus last year and will live there again this year.

She said she noticed a lot of freshman on campus, and the events will be helpful to them.

"I think that will help especially because a lot are incoming students - it will be a greater hit with freshmen," Equezabel said.
