Senior Center to apply for grant for upgrades
Hoping to make some needed upgrades, Donna Greaves, the director of the Salvador M. Guerrero Southside Senior Center, is taking the first steps in applying for money for the building.
In need of new tile in some of the rooms, Greaves said the 900 S. Dixie Blvd. building also needs to be checked for Asbestosis.
“We want to check to make sure (the building) doesn’t have it,” Greaves said.
Ector County Commissioners on Monday approved allowing Greaves, who has been director since 2010, to begin pursuing a Community Development Grant through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Greaves said she has lots of work before she can submit the application.
“I need about three bids before I can apply,” Greaves said.
Ector County Judge Susan Redford said the center hosts several different events for the seniors and is also the starting point of the annual Martin Luther King Jr. march.
“I can tell you … the Salvador M. Guerrero Southside Senior Center is, and has been, a critical focal point for the south side of Odessa for many decades now,” Redford said.
Greaves said there have been no accidents because of the loose tile, but she said the people who use the center are the biggest priority and she wants the floors fixed before anything happens.
“The seniors are concerned about the possibility of getting hurt,” Greaves said.
