A good citizen is being honored for good deeds by the Boy Scouts.

Dick Saulsbury Sr., founder of Saulsbury Industries, will be honored Thursday when he receives the inaugural Good Scout Award from the Buffalo Trail Council, Boy Scouts of America at the 2010 Good Scout Luncheon.

The luncheon is scheduled at 11:30 a.m. at the Odessa Country Club. Proceeds will support the Scouting program throughout the Permian Basin.

Saulsbury, a former Boy Scout and Webelo leader, is being honored for his charity to the city and not just his dedication to the Scouts.

“When they first told me about it, I first thought there had to be other people better than me,” he said.

Scout Executive Lyman Gifford said in a news release that “Dick has demonstrated in his daily life each facet of the (Scout) Oath. He also lives by the Scout Law by being trustworthy, helpful, thrifty, reverent and most definitely, cheerful.”

Valerie Acosta, finance director of the Buffalo Trail Council, Boy Scouts of America, said that the Good Scout Award is given to someone who shows duty to country, God and others.

“Every time he’s involved in a community organization, his actions stand out as that of a Scout. It’s more of the characteristics he takes on when he’s involved in something. The insight he has given has been very valuable,” Acosta said.

Saulsbury, who serves on boards such as the Education Foundation and Meals on Wheels, said that children are the future and that if he lived in a different area, he would still do what he could to give to the community.

“I just want to help build and instill good moral foundations in our younger generations. Whatever I can do to help kids,” he said.
