Boy was hit by F-250

Streetlight getting fixed at intersection

Police have identified the child killed in a car-pedestrian accident Sunday night as 5-year-old Christopher Kayden Roedel.

According to a news release from the Odessa Police Department, witnesses saw Roedel get hit by a Ford F-250 as he was running across West University Boulevard around 6 p.m.

Shirley Standefer, an investigator with the Ector County Medical Examiner’s Office, pronounced Roedel dead at the scene, near the intersection of Conover Avenue, at 8:03 p.m.

Luis Najera, who witnessed the accident, rushed over to help the young victim.

“I went to pick him up to get him out of the street,” Najera said Sunday night through interpreter Steven Rojo.

Najera said Roedel suffered from leg and facial injuries.

Streetlights at the intersection were not working at the time of the accident darkening the streets and sidewalks where Roedel was hit.

Matt Squyres, City of Odessa director of public works, said a call came into the city offices at 8 a.m. Monday reporting the streetlight was out.

Oncor, which maintains streetlights in Odessa, has hired a contractor to do the job.

“Most of our lights are repaired within a day of being reported,” Sue Mercer, area director for Oncor, said.

Lights broken or working improperly can be reported online at the City of Odessa website, odessa-tx.gov, or be called in to  Oncor at 1-888-313-4747.

The release said charges will not be filed against the driver, Cesar Ortega.
