An 8-year-old girl was flown to Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock and was listed in stable condition after she was struck by a pickup Tuesday afternoon, her father said.
Alfonso Portillo said doctors at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa told him his daughter Ambriah had a broken femur bone, a punctured liver and a fractured skull. A supervisor at Covenant said Portillo was under heavy sedatives and was undergoing several CAT scans late Tuesday.
Earlier Tuesday, her grandfather Polo Portillo said Ambriah was roller-skating with her friends on a sidewalk at 46th Street and Redbud Avenue when she was hit by the pickup.
"They were just playing outside," Polo Portillo said.
Odessa police Sgt. Rick Smith said a 16-year-old was driving a pickup when he swerved onto the sidewalk at 46th Street near Redbud Avenue. Smith said the driver tried to avoid a dog but instead struck the girl as she was roller-skating on the sidewalk.
Police were called at 5:23 p.m. Tuesday. Smith said the police were still investigating the accident.
Skid marks at the scene went onto the sidewalk, going about 50 feet before hooking back to the street and leading to the truck, which was parked in a dirt alley nearby. Smith said the girl was with friends playing on the sidewalk before the accident.
Polo Portillo said Ambriah was also practicing for ice skating at the time.
