Illegal immigration investigation leads to arrest
PRESIDIO A man wanted for a 1996 homicide in Auroa, Ill., was found among three men arrested during an illegal immigration investigation sting Sunday, according to a news release from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Marfa sector.
According to the release, Border Patrol agents have tracked three men entering a taxi near a bar in Presidio, including Bernardo Beltran. Beltran and the other two men were arrested and initially accused of entering the country illegally.
While identifying the three men, records revealed that Beltran was wanted on a murder charge in Aurora, where police accused him of killing his 5-month-old daughter in 1996.
According to information the Border Patrol received from authorities in Aurora, Beltran brought his daughter to a hospital there and claimed she had a fall, but after she died in the hospital, he was charged with aggravated battery on a child. He fled the city before he was arrested.
Beltran was being held at the Presidio County jail pending extradition.
