MIDLAND A federal judge sentenced a Midland woman to five years of probation Thursday after she pleaded guilty in August to continuing to take her mother’s Social Security benefits for almost five years after her mother’s death.

Jnita G. Howard was accused of receiving $52,692 in her mother’s survivor widow’s benefits payments between April 15, 2005, and June 30, 2009, although she disputed the total amount taken. U.S. District Judge Rob A. Junell also sentenced Howard to pay a restitution of $36,906.52 for the crime.

Howard could have been sentenced to up to 10 years in federal prison and fined $250,000.
