A disturbance call in West Odessa resulted in a suspect being shot by Ector County Sheriff’s Office deputies Sunday.
Sgt. Gary Duesler said the sheriff’s office got a call of a disturbance in progress at 10:50 a.m. in the 6700 block of Ector Avenue.
Officers were sent to the location, Duesler said. As they were approaching, they were told a white pickup had left the scene and was headed south on Ector Avenue, he said.
The dispatcher advised deputies that she had been told by the caller that if deputies got involved, “It’s not going to be good.”
The suspect’s vehicle was spotted at 42nd Street and West County Road. The sheriff’s office ran the plates and confirmed it was the correct vehicle, Duesler said.
Sheriff’s deputies tried to stop the pickup, and a pursuit began, he said. The pursuit ended in the 5200 block of West 40th, a residence.
Other deputies had already joined the pursuit, Duesler said. “We knew the suspect had a weapon, so they exited their vehicles with weapons drawn,” he said. “The suspect exited the pick up, knife in hand, and began charging at deputies.”
“He ignored their commands to drop his weapon,” Duesler said. “The three officers fired at the suspect. No officers were hurt. The suspect was transported to the hospital.”
Duesler said his condition is unknown at this time.
The investigation is being turned over to the Texas Rangers, which Duesler said is standard protocol for an officer or deputy-involved shooting.
