Attorney arrested

Odessa attorney Brian Chavez was one of four people arrested on burglary of habitation charges after police say the four forced themselves inside a home in the 600 block of East 36th Street Saturday, Odessa Police Sgt. Mike Anaya said.

“From what I understand the four people who were arrested knew the people that were at the residence,” Anaya said. “Their intent was to assault, to gain access – they were basically uninvited to the residence.”

Also arrested were Rosemary Soto, Jacob Chavez, and Stanley Wilkins. All four were charged with burglary of a habitation and were released on a $7,500 bond.

Odessa police officer William Mitch Upchurch said the suspects were charged after police stopped them in front of 607 E. 36th St. Two people, including one of the suspects and two people inside the home, had minor injuries, while one man hobbled into an ambulance to ride to Medical Center Hospital for treatment.

Police received the disturbance call at about 12:45 a.m. Saturday. Neighbor Kenny Smith said a few cars pulled up to the house and their occupants “started messing” with the neighbors.

Witness Jackie Stephens said some of them got into the house, and about 30 seconds later, after hearing pounding and screaming, several people jumped back into what she described as a Chrysler Sebring and a Ford F-350 and took off on North Tom Green Avenue.

“All I saw were people jumping in the cars and leaving,” Stephens said.

Upchurch said police were not sure of the motives behind the home invasion.

Attempts to reach Chavez were unsuccessful as of press time.
