An announcement for the home of FutureGen won’t be coming Tuesday like planned, according to the Department of Energy.

James A. Slutz, the acting principal deputy assistant secretary in the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy, sent a letter to Michael J. Mudd, the chief executive officer of the FutureGen Industrial Alliance Inc., saying the Alliance should hold off on making a decision until the DOE can issue a Record of Decision.

“We would consider it inadvisable for the Alliance to schedule any site selection announcement or media advisory at this time without prior consultation with the Department,” Slutz wrote.

Slutz said the Record of Decision can’t be made until comments are evaluated following the final Environmental Impact Study. Since that comment period ends Monday, the DOE doesn’t anticipate making a Record of Decision by Tuesday.

FutureGen is the $1.8 billion coal-fired, near-zero emissions electricity plant being developed by the DOE and the FutureGen Alliance. The four finalists to land the project are Odessa, Jewett in East Texas and the Illinois communities of Tuscola and Matoon.
