Allegro awarded national grants for world premiere

The Allegro Chorale and Orchestra Inc., received a grant from the prestigious Meet The Composer’s MetLife Creative Connections program for the Spanish composer Elisenda Fábregas.

Allegro commissioned Fábregas to compose “The Flaming Rock” for the Allegro Chorale and the Cassatt String Quartet.

The world premiere, honoring Dorothy Croft, longtime leader in music education and other cultural activities in Odessa, is scheduled for 8 p.m. Nov. 17 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, corner of “M” and Illinois, in Midland; and at 3 p.m. Nov. 18 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 7601 N. Grandview Ave., in Odessa.

Fabregas will attend the concerts and give a pre-concert lecture about her work.

The concerts are free and are open to the public.

The New York-based Cassatt String Quartet, whose second violinist, Jennifer Leshnower is from Odessa, also received a Chamber Music America Touring grant to perform in concert with the Allegro under the baton of Nyela Basney and lead the first chamber music residency in the Ector County Independent School District.
