Senior Trevor Adams performs well on the football field and in the classroom.

It's a distinction earning him a State Farm Scholar Athlete award, one of only 50 out of 1800 honorees across the entire state and the only one between here and El Paso.

"I was very excited when I got it. Thank God for the ability he gave me. I'm excited the award isn't just about academics or sports but both," Adams said.

He heard the news in early May and received a $1,000 scholarship check Thursday at the Permian senior awards ceremony. He said he is glad counselor Geoff Hetherington asked if he could submit his information for the award. Trevor, 18, was a quarterback for Permian and has decided to attend Northwest Missouri State and play quarterback for them. While playing for the Bearcats, he will major in biology and psychology. He wants to become a chiropractor.

"He was highly recruited to play football there," Hetherington said.

Adams said he felt that the coaches at Northwest Missouri State had integrity. One is from Odessa.

"That all drew me in," he said.

He said he likes science and math, already taking calculus this year. Athletics and academics share some common elements, he said.

"You receive a challenge and the more you prepare, the better you are," Adams said.

In other to apply for the award, Hetherington had to submit information about Adams, particularly his involvement in the community.

"That leadership was something they said was key to him getting the award," he said.

In his spare time, he volunteers at the Permian Basin Mission Center and assists Meals on Wheels.

"They've helped me. I think it's important to give back to the community that gives youth so much," Adams said.

    Some of Trevor's activities:

    >> Football.

    >> Odessa Symphony Guild.

    >> First Baptist Church youth group and student choir.

    >> Black Magic show choir.

    >> Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
