Local foundation presents Buffalo Trail Council with grant support
The Abell-Hanger Foundation has awarded $25,000 to the Buffalo Trail Council in support of keeping horses a part of the programs offered at Buffalo Trail Scout Ranch.
When the majority of the acres of Buffalo Trail Scout Ranch burned in the Rock House fire in the spring it charred the range grass used for off-season horse pasture. The council staff and board turned to the community seeking assistance to keep the BTSR horse program operational.
The grant will help support emergency feed and care of BTSR’s herd of 58 horses.
This summer more than 1,000 scouts will have a first time experience with riding horses. Even more scouts will also have an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness first hand nature’s resilience. Despite the area’s continued well-below-normal rainfall much of the vegetation is sprouting new growth.
The BSA Summer Camp Outcomes study conducted by Harris Interactive in 2000 found that 86 percent of scouts had an experience which encouraged a desire to learn about new things while at camp.
