This NOAA satellite image taken Saturday shows a mass of clouds off the eastern seaboard associated with a strong storm that is too far off the coast to provide any notable precipitation. Instead, the East is experiencing another frigid February day temperatures in the 0s and 10s in the Northern Plains, and 30s as far south as Texas. The Northeast is also cold with temperatures in the 20s and 30s.

NWS: 70 percent chance of wintry mix Sunday

A 70 percent chance of one to two inches of snow, sleet or both is predicted for Sunday, and if it falls, the new seasonal snowfall record could be bumped up to around 21 inches.

A winter storm watch is in effect for Sunday until 6 p.m., but Midland’s National Weather Service Lead Forecaster Douglas Cain said precipitation may still fall after that time.

“We have an up-trough that swings across and passes through our area,” he said. “This has been an active winter season where we started receiving snow in December and January, and now, this is the first possible event for February.”

He said Monday’s outlook won’t resemble Sunday, with highs in the 60s.

“A southwest wind will follow after the trough passes through, which will quickly make conditions much warmer,” he said.
