Student charged with hitting coach

A Hood Junior High student was charged with assault causing bodily injury, a class A misdemeanor, after hitting a coach in a fight Tuesday morning, officials said.

The eighth-grader was taken Tuesday to the Ector County Youth Center, center director Lou Serrano said. The student was released the same day, Serrano said.

The student got involved in a fight involving his younger brother and another student as that fight was being broken up, said Mike Adkins, Ector County Independent School District communications director.

“He was sort of mouthing off, wanting to get involved in the situation,” Adkins said.

After a scuffle ensued, Adkins said the student hit coach Kyle Hubbard in the mouth. Hubbard received five stitches to close a cut.

In addition to criminal charges, the student faces disciplinary action from the school, Adkins said.

“The administrators have a wide range of actions they can look at,” he said.
