Textbooks still a major issue

Curriculum is the biggest issue Texas education faces in the aftermath of the upcoming election, District 1 Democratic State Board of Education incumbent Rene Nuñez said.

Nuñez stopped by the Midland County Democratic Headquarters to discuss his re-election candidacy Wednesday.

Nuñez was candid in his opposition to amendments made to the education curriculum in Texas. Members of the state board of education voted in May to revise textbooks to amend the teaching of certain social studies curriculum such as the civil rights movement, religious freedoms and America’s relationship with the United Nations.

Critics of the amendments claimed these members were trying to re-write history with a conservative slant.
