Well, some trends in the staffing industry, which tend to typically prove reliable in indicating what’s to come next, suggest that business owners can look forward to the future with optimism.
“Because the staffing industry encompasses so many fields and serves a diverse range of businesses, it typically serves as a microcosm for the U.S. job market,” says Jane Williams, president of Snelling Staffing of Odessa. “Trends in our industry tend to reflect what’s going on with the bigger picture.”
Some positive information released from the staffing industry includes:
• The American Staffing Association Staffing Index, which evaluates the staffing industry’s performance on a weekly and long-term basis, has stabilized. It had been decreasing since the beginning of the recession.
• A study of ASA members shows that almost 75% of members think that sales will increase by the end of the year. The staffing industry’s recovery has occurred right before the recovery of the U.S. economy for almost every recession in the past three decades.
• The Monster Employment Index, which measures online job demand, rose four points in February.
• Companies are using staffing agencies to “top grade” their staffs. Since there is an influx of qualified candidates, organizations have the opportunity to make sure there are only “A players” on their team. This increases future productivity.
“I am confident that both our industry and our economy will bounce back,” Jane adds. “For the time-being, companies can use the flexibility of the staffing industry to help compensate for feelings of unpredictability.”
