Hobbs homeowner shoots man
HOBBS, N.M. A 70-year-old homeowner shot a man who he said was trying to break into his residence Tuesday evening.
According to a news release, Watson Green called police at 10:20 p.m. to report someone was trying to break into his residence in the 1100 block of North Denson Street, and that he had armed himself.
The Hobbs Police Department dispatch told Green to put the gun down and that officers would be arriving shortly, the release stated.
When police did arrive, they found 43-year-old Wallace Roberson in an alley suffering from a gunshot wound, the release said. Roberson was transported to Lea Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, the release stated.
According to the release, officers learned Green had fired one shot through the door.
No charges were filed against Green, but the district attorney is reviewing the case, the release stated.
A similar incident happened in Odessa on Friday when homeowner, Robert Gomez supposedly shot at three people trying to steal from his work truck in the front of his 2123 Muskingum Ave. home.
Rodney Allen Burns 53, died as a result of his wounds Friday morning. Two other people, David Allen Whitehead, 40, and his wife Tanya Whitehead, 34, were arrested and charged in connection to that case. They remained in jail Wednesday.
As of Wednesday, no charges have been filed against Gomez and the investigation is still ongoing, Odessa Police spokeswoman Cpl. Sherrie Carruth said.
