Under the sea

Those who go see the Globe Theatre production of "The Little Mermaid" will leave the desert and take a trip under the sea Nov. 13.

For Ollie the Prince, also known as landlubber Justin Relyea, the production is all about kids.

"I love children and know they are really going to like this show. It’s so lighthearted," he said.

Relyea, who said he wants to major in theater, said he was drawn to auditioning for "The Little Mermaid" because he’s always liked the storyline of the show.

Globe Theatre Artistic Director Anthony Ridley said the show is not the same as the Disney movie because many of those characters are copyrighted. Thus, names and events differ to some degree. The Globe production is based on the original Hans Christian Andersen story.

Both had similar starts — the mermaid comes to the surface and sees the prince.

Ridley said the Globe staff wanted to focus on plays that people are familiar with this year.

"We’ve experimented to know certain things that work and wanted to do plays with recognizable titles," he said.
