Golf: Permian boys get second in West Texas Classic

Permian High School’s boys golf team staged a strong rally in Saturday’s second round and finished second in the West Texas Boys Classic.

The Panthers finished at 610 over the tournament’s two rounds with identical 305s. The first round was Friday at Ratliff Ranch Golf Links and the second round was Saturday at Odessa Country Club’s Links Course.

El Paso Hanks, a perennial contender for the UIL Class 5A State Championships, won the title at 591. Nick Chacon won the medalist title for the Knights at 143 by beating Amarillo High’s Colt Melton on a third hole of a playoff.

Permian was led by a 149 from Micah Rodgers, a 152 from Hayden Burnett, a 154 by Mason Taliaferro and a 155 by Dylan Pierce. Shane Patterson rounded out the team scoring at 166.

Odessa High came in 13th with a 651 behind a two-round total of 160 by Austin Holcomb. Bobby Florez and Justin Holcomb both finished at 163, Lonnie Crow had a 166 and Matthew Speer shot 173 over 36 holes.
