Team Tennis: Permian falls in 2-5A semifinals

Permian High School suffered a loss Friday during the District 2-5A Team Tennis Tournament but still has hope of earning a trip to regionals.

Ranked No. 25 in the state by the Texas Tennis Coaches Association and seeded third in the tournament, Permian opened the day with a decisive 10-4 quarterfinal victory against Amarillo High at Odessa High's Bob Clark Tennis Center.

Then in the semifinals, Permian lost 13-5 to No. 11 Lubbock Coronado at the Ratliff Tennis Complex.

While Coronado advanced to face No. 9 San Angelo Central in the championship match at 9 a.m. today at Ratliff, Permian fell into the third-place match and will play Amarillo Tascosa at 9 a.m. today at the Permian courts.

If Permian beats Tascosa and Coronado wins the championship, Permian then would get a second-place playback against Central. The top two teams qualify for next week's Region I-5A Championships in Abilene.

"The first one was stressful because we knew we had to hold to the seed," Permian head coach Mary Kay Mann said of facing sixth-seeded Amarillo High, which her team edged 10-9 during the regular season. "The pressure was on us, not them, but the kids went out there ready to play.

"Now we'll have to come back and fight hard against Tascosa because they're a good team, too."

Permian took a 4-3 lead on Amarillo High after the doubles, with seniors Doug Lasater and Chase Cawthron winning at the No. 1 boys position for a key point. Jake Wood and Elizabeth Espinoza won the mixed doubles point while the top two Permian girls doubles teams - Charlotte Dawson-Tai Lucero and Lauren Bolinger-Carrie Lasater - also won.

Then in singles, freshman Austin Hunt won at the No. 3 boys position, Doug Lasater won at No. 1 and Jake Wood added the 10th point at No. 4. Meanwhile, Dawson, Lucero and Bolinger won at the Nos. 1-3 girls singles positions.

"I think everybody was a little bit nervous," Doug Lasater said. "But after the first couple of games, we just got in there and took it to them."

In the semifinals, Permian simply was outplayed by a strong Coronado team, though there were highlights in Permian's five victories.

Dawson and Lucero won 7-5, 7-5 at No. 1 girls doubles against Coronado's Mary Alice Blacketer and Alex Siegel, who won the Region I-5A girls doubles title in the spring and went on to reach the semifinals of the state tournament.

In girls singles, Dawson, Lucero and Bolinger all won, while Cawthron pulled out a victory at No. 5 boys doubles.

"We knew that we'd have a tough match this afternoon," Lucero said. "All we were thinking of was trying to do our hardest and never giving up." 

Now Permian will try to knock off a Tascosa squad it edged 10-9 in a tense dual about a month ago and hope things go its way in the Coronado-Central dual.

Coronado beat Central in Odessa earlier this year during the Petroplex Team Tennis Tournament semifinals, though Central beat Coronado in a District 2-5A dual for the regular-season title.

"It's going to be a good battle - they're fantastic," said Coronado head coach David Denham, who was Permian's head coach from 2002-05. "They're impressive and we know we're in for a battle. The kids are looking forward to it and we'll see what happens."
