No penny for our thoughts?

Chuck Palmer | Odessa

I've got as much respect for our 16th president, Abe Lincoln, as anyone else. But, I think it's about time we discard use of the penny in our monetary system.

I can go through a few days of nominal cash transactions, and end up with an entire pocket full of the dreaded copper coins. They end up taking up so much space in my change holder it's about to split, not to mention the extra weight.

Plus, it now costs the federal government many times the actual worth as face value to manufacture a penny.

I believe it's time for a House bill to not only abolish the making of pennies, but also make it legal to round to the nearest nickel in all cash transactions. This will not only eventually take the penny out of circulation, but also limit the number of those you may get back in change. Plus, save the federal government (we taxpayers) millions of dollars in minting costs.
