Man dies at park

BIG BEND A 69-year-old South Carolina man died from a medical condition Sunday after hiking in the Grapevine Hills at Big Bend National Park, a release issued by National Parks Service stated.

Richard Bruce Johnson of Columbia, S.C., became ill after hiking Sunday, the release stated. Park rangers were transporting Johnson in the park ambulance when he became unresponsive.

According to NPS, park rangers, as well as Terlingua Fire and EMS worked to resuscitate Johnson.

“We are truly saddened by his tragic death,” Big Bend National Park Superintendent William E. Wellman said. “And offer our condolences to the Johnson family and friends.”
