Families can talk about drinking issues

Standards Sales, the local Anheuser-Busch distributor and local convenience stores, are reminding parents to use these moments to talk with their teens about the issue of underage drinking. Bright colored strips displayed in coolers where adult beverages are sold provide parents with information about how to access an important program called "Family Talk." This program helps prevent underage drinking by providing tips on how parents can openly and honestly communicate with their teens.
Retailers are on the front line when it comes to underage drinking by preventing sales to minors and participation in the Family Talk program extends their reach even further by asking parents to talk to their kids about the issue.
Research shows parents have a significant influence on their children's decisions on this subject. According to the 2007 Gfk Roper Youth Report, 71 percent of children ages 8 to 17 cite their parents as the No. 1 influence on whether they drink alcohol.
Family Talk was developed by authorities in child psychology, education, family counseling and alcohol treatment to encourage communication about alcohol issues. A 2007 survey by Data Development Worldwide survey found 93 percent of parents who have used Family Talk would recommend it to other parents.
