NUGGETS: The church reflects the light of the Son
When I wrote the book “Days of Our Lives” revealing the spiritual days of our lives out of the first chapter of Genesis, I was overwhelmed as I did the study of the forth day. “ Then God said “let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years;” (Genesis 1:14). “The greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also” (Genesis 1:16). The Moon has no light of its own. It reflects the Sun. The Theologians agree the whiteness, the brightness of the moon is compared to the church who receives it’s light from the Son, Christ Jesus.
The Moon receives light from the sun and gives light to the world. So the Church receives light from the Son , Christ and gives Light to the world. “You are the Light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden” (Matthew 5:14). The Church shines light to the world by the way it reflects Jesus Christ. The church may not always give a good reflection. A clean surface always gives a better reflection than a smudged one. Regardless of the smudges, God has always had a remnant.
The Moon reflects the light of the sun to the world at night. The Church reflects the Light of Christ in the dark times of people’s lives. In the pain, agony, loneness, indebtedness, depression and hopelessness, there is the Light to look to, His name is Jesus. Many times He will shine through a true Christian to meet the need of one in a very dark night of their life. “Among whom you shine as lights in the world” (Philemon 2:15)
The moon is observed to have spots. The church as great as it is, is made up of Mankind and has sin spots. “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us” (1 John 1:8). What many do not understand, is, Christians are not perfect. They are in a process of becoming like Christ. That does not give a license to sin but a covering of grace while they learn to do what is right. In that process they are still able to help those who will trust in God. God does not respond to needs. If He did all needs would be instantly met. No, He responds to faith. He responds to faith, faith in what Jesus did for us. He uses the Moon (the church) to help people come into that faith in Christ Jesus through His word. Faith comes by hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17).
The moon only shows her fullness from time to time. Sometimes there is a full moon, sometimes a half moon and sometimes a quarter moon. Even though you can’t see the full moon all time, it is still there. The church is not always walking in its fullness, but it is always there. ‘A City that is set on a hill cannot be hidden” There will always be a remnant. It can be subdued for a number of reasons, but it will always be there until it is taken out in the rapture.
Now we come to the place to ask ourselves, am I a part of the darkness the light of the church needs to give light to, or am I a part of the Moon (the church) that has been subdued and not reflecting Christ for some reason? If I say I am a true Christian, then I will be reflecting Christ Jesus to those in need, to those in darkness.” Lord I pray that I would be a reflection of you in this “New Year!”
