LETTER: Lots of hoaxes out there
I just want to thank the editors of your paper for (usually) correcting some of the elderly readers who write letters because of something they’ve read on the Internet.
Some folks are scared to death after reading false stories they find in email or questionable media sites, like the nice lady a few weeks back who wrote in concerned because she read where Obama had taken the American flag off of Air Force One.
Looks like Sandy Milner is guilty of believing the same hoaxes/lies that some of our Senior Citizens are duped by.
Mr. Milners’ “quotes” supposedly attributed to Obama is a prime example of how not knowing how to distinguish fact from fiction is affecting some of our elder citizens.
Before freaking out over something you’ve read in an email or one of these goofy websites (i.e. the Onion News Network) please check it out for yourself!
About.com/snopes.com and urban legends.com are just a couple of sites you can go to see if there’s any truth to what Aunt Edna sent in an email.
