LETTER: Will there be a downsize?
I have a question to ask the general public, as well as the leaders of the Republican Party. It’s not one I’ve seen or heard asked. If I may, my question is this.
If the Republican candidate is elected president, and there is a GOP majority in Congress, will there be a “down-sizing” of the government? If there is, I have a suggestion where to start.
For some reason, we haven’t heard much, if anything, about the actions of all the czars and their little fiefdoms who are all at the beck and call of the present President and who might not work as whole-heartedly for a Republican. “Oh well, we’ll just get rid of the czars, and upper management, and then things will be all right.”
No, ladies and gentlemen, that won’t make everything OK. We are asking about the down-sizing of the government, and its propensity to want to micromanage every conceivable facet of life and business in America! I submit to you that these departments don’t need new management. They need to be gone!! And while I have your attention, there needs to be some of the older ones pruned back also.
Then, as long as I’m dreaming, let’s take a hard look at the Civil Service structure, with particular attention to salary/perks demotions, transfers, and firing procedures, for openers.
The Civil Service has as good a union as teachers do. After several years on the job, seniority kicks in, and it becomes almost impossible to fire them. In the mid-to-upper levels, they become almost untouchable.
In closing, I ask the Republican candidate and his party to consider a plan to downsize the government.
