WHO IS HE?
>> Born in 1951 under the name José Manuel Figueroa, Joan Sebastian's career has spanned three decades of Latin entertainment and recording releases.
>> At the age of 17, Figueroa left seminary to pursue music as his true calling and eventually changed his name in 1977.
>> The singing cowboy is often pictured with his horse.
>> Sebastian's repertoire includes romantic and ranchera music, pop and norteña. He also has penned lyrics for other Latin artists.
>> Sebastian has won three Grammy Awards and five Latin Grammys.
>> In 1996, he played an acting role in the Mexican soap opera "Tú y Yo" (You and I).
>> The singer/songwriter was diagnosed with cancer in 1999, but he didn't stop working and eventually beat the disease.
>> Sebastian's 2000 release of "Secreto de Amor" sold more than 1 million copies and was nominated for a Billboard Award, eventually winning awards for song and album of the year in the Regional/ Mexican category.
>> Sebastian was also awarded The Silver Pen Award in 2000 and has won several other prestigious awards in recognition of his outstanding entertainment career.
>> He's been called "The People's Poet" and "King of Jaripeo."
