Girls track and field: Andrews freshman picks up second Region I-3A title
LUBBOCK One gold medal apparently wasn't enough for Andrews High School freshman Callie Ives in her first experience at the Region I-3A Track and Field Championships.
With a personal-best effort of 38 feet, 1.5 inches, on her second attempt, Ives won the girls triple jump at Texas Tech's Fuller Track Stadium.
Ives scratched her final four attempts of the competition and the jump held up for a victory, with fellow freshman Trianna McCalister of Monahans taking second at 36-10.75.
On the opening day of the meet, Ives won the long jump at 19-1.25, so she'll be plenty busy June 6 at the UIL Class 3A State Championships in Austin.
Ives said the second day was a smoother experience, albeit with the same results.
"I wasn't as nervous," Ives said. "I knew what to expect from the crowd and the way the meet's run."
Ives scratched the final four attempts of the triple jump in order to conserve energy for the 800 relay, which later finished sixth.
It was a full weekend for the Andrews freshman, who also was a varsity softball player during the spring.
"The poise she has is unbelievable," said Lady Mustangs assistant Marcus Schulz, who coaches Ives in the long and triple jump. "Being a varsity athlete in multiple sports, she's got the poise to do whatever she wants to do. She just gets out there and does it. It's easy to coach kids like that."
The sailing wasn't quite as smooth for the other freshman who qualified for state.
McCalister of Monahans said she qualified with her sixth and final jump of the finals.
"I was just crying because I was doing bad," said McCalister, who later finished sixth in the 200. "Then I was like, ‘OK, I've got to get this one,' and I just went out there and jumped. I was going into regionals (seeded) second, so I was hoping it could go that way."
