Indians plan to attack every way they can

Balance should offset loss of Boyd

SEMINOLE The Seminole Indians will have a completely different look this season.

After three years of giving Eric Boyd the ball and getting out of the way, the Indians will have a new quarterback.

Neither Cal Moring or Steven Garza — the candidates to become Seminole’s new starting QB — are as fleet of foot as Boyd was.

“I don’t think you replace him,” Indians head coach Chris Burtch said. “You just modify and build on the tools that our kids have at that position.”

Boyd finished last season with 1,520 yards rushing on 192 carries and 21 touchdowns.

He completed 94-of-183 passes for 1,343 yards with seven interceptions and eight touchdowns.

“We are not necessarily going to change the offense,” Burtch said, “but we may change what we emphasize.

“Instead of the running quarterback scheme, this year will be a one-back game, but much more balanced.”

The Indians are expected to be tremendously deep at the wide receiver position, a slot that wasn’t utilized very much with Boyd because of his average throwing arm.

Corbin McDaniel and Chewy Macharigui are back, and Jeremy Alvidrez and Fernando Dominquez should be contributors.

“We can replace (Boyd). Everyone knew he was going to get the ball,” McDaniel said. “This year we’ll have a variety of plays. (Moring and Garza) can both throw a bit better, so I think it will be better for us.

“They can spread the ball around.”

Burtch also expects the Indians to have depth at the running back position. Junior Nicky Nave will be relied upon as well as offensive linemen Brad Moriel and Hadley Mann.

“The experienced line is real important and should make up for the inexperienced quarterbacks,” Moriel said. “I think we’ll have an improved offense with more variety than just keeping it every time.”

One of the keys to that variety is McDaniel, both offensively and defensively. He has struggled with injuries the past two years and the Indians need him healthy this season.

Burtch said McDaniel showed a lot more speed in the spring, consistently running the 40 in 4.5 seconds or less.

“It is important that he’s healthy, especially for defense,” Burtch said. “He can neutralize their best receivers.”
