Youth Season

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has established statewide Youth Only open seasons for deer and turkey, which will run concurrently on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 19-20.

The Texas Youth Hunting Program was established to increase the number of youths participating in wildlife and hunting activities and to promote the hunting heritage in Texas. These seasons, open only to licensed hunters 16 years of age or younger, provide opportunities to learn about wildlife conservation through an enjoyable and memorable outdoor experience and allow parents and mentors to introduce youngsters to safe and responsible hunting. The TPWD encourages experienced hunters to seek out youth and provide the guidance to make the event both enjoyable and educational for the beginning hunter.

The deer and turkey seasons are open in all counties where there is a general open season for white-tailed deer. All legal hunting means and methods are allowed, with the exception of Grayson County, where it is archery only for deer. Youth hunting licenses are available online.

Be sure to check the Outdoor Annual for all pertinent rules before going afield.
