Tennis: OHS, Permian beat Lubbock Monterey

Odessa High won a district team tennis dual match for the first time since 2003 on Saturday by knocking off Lubbock Monterey 10-9 at the Bob Clark Tennis Center.

Jerry Cuellar, Sam Primera and Gabriel Chavez all posted 2-0 records as Odessa High won six of the nine boys matches in the District 2-5A dual.

Annie Lewis also went 2-0, winning at No. 1 girls singles while teaming with Justin Hernandez to win at mixed doubles. Abbey Rodriguez added a victory at No. 2 girls singles, Sam Canlas won at No. 5 girls singles and Ryan Dubois won the elusive 10th match for OHS at No. 3 boys singles.

"It's been too long, but nonetheless the kids are excited and they should be," Odessa High head coach Jayson Everett said. "It was a pretty hard-fought match between equally matches teams and it's nice to get a win."

Odessa High trailed 4-3 after doubles matches, but Cuellar and Chavez pulled out a key three-set match at the No. 2 boys doubles spot to lead the way to the victory.

The Bronchos (1-1 district) return to action at 3:10 p.m. Tuesday when they play host to Big Spring.

Chase Cawthron, Levi Valdez, Nick Webster, Jake Wood and Zack Webster all posted undefeated days for Permian's boys.

On the girls side, Charlotte Dawson, Tai Lucero, Lauren Bolinger, Carrie Lasater and Elizabeth Espinoza all had 2-0 days.

Also for Permian, Doug Lasater won at No. 1 boys singles.

Permian came back in strong fashion after losing its district opener earlier in the week at San Angelo Central. Permian returns to district action at 3:10 p.m. Tuesday at Midland Lee.
