Pair of glasses helps one to see beauty of creation
Today I picked up my new eyeglasses. It is really a big deal for someone who has been wearing glasses since the first grade. As I was contemplating how I should dispose of the old ones, I was overcome with the fact that I had been blessed to see so many historical events through those cracked and blurry lens. I had used these glasses for the past seven years which meant that I was able to witness the best that England had to offer through those lens. I was able to witness the natural devastation of the Gulf Coast as I arrived in Galveston a day after Hurricane Ike hit.
I was able to watch in awe as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, a choir that my late grandmother listened to every Saturday on the radio in her shotgun house in Dime Box, Texas, sang in their sanctuary, and I witnessed through those lens, on a cold January morning, a black man emerge from the halls of the nation’s capital to its steps and be sworn in as the president of the United States of America.
But even more important, through those lens, I could hear the voice of God everytime I opened my Bible whether in the pulpit or in the solitude of my home. Those lens allowed me to recognize and appreciate family and friends, and they helped me interpret the maze of hidden beauty in God’s creation. It was then that I decided that I would not dispose of them in the usual manner. I would not recycle them through any faith based program for the less fortunate. I would designate a place of honor to place them so that anytime I need to remind myself of the awesome journey God’s has brought me through, I could put them on my face once again and glorify him all over.
His Holy Spirit is similar to those glasses in that it allows us to see and appreciate the wonder of God. It puts the blurry things of this life in focus. It makes plain the complicated mysteries that lead to the abundant life. It gives us pleasures unknown that God wants all His Children to enjoy. Isn’t it great to realize that you were once blind, but now you can see!
