Sixteen-year-old recovering in Lubbock hospital

KERMIT Winkler County Sheriff's deputies are still investigating the sexual assault of a 16-year-old Kermit girl that took place during the weekend.

Investigators have several people of interest in the attack, which left the girl with severe head injuries, Winkler County Sheriff Office Chief Deputy George Keely said. The girl is still recovering in a Lubbock hospital.

Keely said the girl went to an acquaintance's house to see a friend during the weekend and the assault took place there. He declined to name any of those people,

"We did (an) extensive crime scene search," he said. Authorities are waiting for some tests to be performed at the Department of Public Safety's crime lab in El Paso.

He added the department was "really close" to making an arrest in this case, but he suggested there could be more than one suspect involved in the assault.
