Football: Permian overcomes slow start to handle Central

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

The Permian high school football team is used to putting its opponents in a hole right away.

This time the entire first quarter passed before the Panthers could put points on the board.

But once the Panthers started clicking, San Angelo Central had very little chance to slow them down. Permian went on to overwhelm the Bobcats 46-14 at Ratliff Stadium in their first District 2-5A action this season.

San Angelo Central's Ryan Chadwick returned the opening kickoff to midfield, and the Bobcats promptly ate up the first seven minutes of the game with a 13-play scoring drive.

Tyler Jones capped off the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run to give San Angelo Central a 7-0 lead after the first quarter.

"We were a little bit flat," Permian head coach Darren Allman said. "We're used to starting fast, and we didn't do that tonight."

The lead didn't last long.

Permian's offense racked up 172 yards and four rushing touchdowns in the second quarter alone. Coupled with a safety earned when San Angelo Central snapped the ball past punter Austin Terry and out of the end zone, the Panthers scored 30 points in the second quarter alone.

"Our coaches told us to pick it up," Ryan Rumbaugh said. "When a coach gets on you, you don't want to screw up again."

Permian's coaching staff got its message across. Whatever the reason for the slow start - after the game Allman guessed he might have cautioned them so much about staying sharp that they went flat - Permian kept its foot on the gas pedal.

Led by quarterback Trevor Adams, who completed 18 of 31 passes for 247 yards and added 40 rushing yards and two touchdowns, Permian's offense gained 378 of its 417 total yards in the final three quarters.

"We just went out and executed," Adams said. "The offensive line did a great job making holes and giving me time in the pocket."

Great field position jump-started Permian's second quarter. A quick kick on third down from the Bobcats' own two gave Permian the ball on the San Angelo Central 25-yard line. Five plays later Sherard Ray scored from eight yards out to tie the score.

San Angelo Central chose to try to convert a 4th-and-4 at its own 28 on its next drive, and Permian held fast.

Another five plays later Adams plunged over from the one-yard line.

Permian scored four more rushing touchdowns - including two scores by Alan Castillejos and one by sophomore running back DeAnthony Fay - and scored on six of its seven drives in the second and third quarters.

The defense only allowed 51 yards during those quarters and forced a Lenvil Mosby interception at the end of the first half.

"A lot of positive things came out of tonight," Allman said. "Our No. 1 enemy right now is consistency."

Score like they did after the first quarter, and the Panthers won't have to worry at all.
