>> rogerthat: “Another thing that challenges OC Academy is they allow anyone to attend. If they arn’t sponsored by an agency, all they have to do is pay the money and register just like college classes. They also don’t have any requirements from the sponsoring agencies-if they get hired they can attend. So what you get is alot of people that have the “COPS” series DVD and want to be the police so they can beat people up, put them in jail, and negatively impact people’s lives forever but just barely passed Permain or Odessa High. You look at Midland, Dallas, Houston, El Paso, Lubbock, and the other big cities, they have some pretty stiff requirements regarding college hours, military, prior similar experience, background, previous employment and so on...”
>> redraiders93: “Seems to me that the problem the OC Academy (as well as the other certification areas) are lacking in STANDARDS. You need to increase the rigor of your classes and raise your expectations. YES, you WILL have a higher failure rate for the classes and academy, but that is MUCH better than passing through and signing off for unqualified people to attempt the test.
It shouldn’t be that hard to figure out!”
>> oonagah: “Can you blame it all on Odessa College? What about the students?”
>> workingmom: “It is not that the whole college needs to be shut down - it just needs to be revamped to make it what it should be.
You have one department that has very few classes offered on campus and the rest are online. You can’t take the classes you need in a timely manner becaue they do not know how to schedule classes and then you end up with nothing by conflict trying to get your degree plan lined out.
Do not even get me started about the new express center - all they can do is twidle their thumbs and walk you upstairs to get your questions answered. This was a huge waste of money.
Yes the students should be responsible for their actions, grades, and attendance however OC has a lot to live up to as well. That is to provide the best learning environment possible with the best teachers they can get to teach - not run an online class or use an open book system.”
>> theirthere: “As a teacher I can tell you that this is exactly what we are dealing with in education at lower levels. Doesn’t anyone see the correlation between these students in this story and the “unacceptable” ranking received because of one thing-the dropout rate.” We are dumbing down in every area of human performance to meet the increasing needs of people in this area of the country/southern United States. There I said it without naming any names.”
>> jaded2: “It’s the system that is broken and it’s producing “broken” people. If we could send our kids to school to just learn...then we would be ok. But, no. It’s not like that at all.
I applaud those teachers that work hard and want to help. However there are so many now that are dissillusioned with the whole thing that they don’t care anymore whether the kids make it. I say get government out of the schools. Teachers are teachers for a reason, they’re almost like surrogate parents.
I went to the academy some years ago. The main thing they stressed was if you couldn’t get through “The Depot” you couldn’t pass.”
