Permian's Black Magic readies for Christmas show

The students in Black Magic might be the only people for whom singing Christmas songs early in November is completely acceptable.

They have been practicing various Christmas pieces for the past month in preparation for their annual Christmas performance at the CrossRoads Fellowship Dec. 8.

“It’s a wonderful show, you can get the holiday spirit, and you see extremely talented kids. And it’s a really good chance for the kids to give back to the community, they work really hard,” Permian High School Choir Director Aaron Hawley said.

Students described the show as “fun” and “upbeat,” The songs being performed will include “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Santa Baby,” and “All I Want For Christmas.”

“We have ‘What Christmas Means To Me,’ it’s acapella. It is an absolutely awesome tune,” Senior  and Black Magic member Jordan Beall said. “It’s so much fun because there are so many different parts, which makes it really cool. It’s a really cool structure, and it’s more upbeat.”

Some of these songs also include choreography, which was created and taught to the students by Tammi Locklar, owner of Tammi Locklar’s Dance Studio.

“It’s great, we do lots of different things. But it is more of a ‘Sing-Off’ style than a ‘Glee’ version of songs,” Hawley said.

The group performances are the pieces that include choreography. The show will, however, include many more performances, with solos or duets from each member of Black Magic.

“It ends up being about an hour, hour-and-a-half, two-hour show. It’s a pretty big thing that we do, we look forward to it every year, just getting to be on stage,” Beall said.

The students see the Christmas concert as not only an enjoyable experience, but one which helps their performance skills. According to Beall, they are appreciative of the experience and the audience.

“Just getting to be in front of our peers and audience, it’s a great feeling that we get,” Beall said. It helps us as performers because people actually care and want to listen to us and that kind of gets our adrenaline going. So it’s just really nice for people to come out and watch the show.”
