A disturbing raid

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

Billy A. White | Crane

I am disturbed. The recent raid of the FLDS facility near Eldorado reeks of government intrusion and constitutional infringement.

Supposedly acting on a tip from a victim that can't be found, enforcers raided the facility and removed several hundred women and children from a place they called home.

While law enforcers have admitted that no concrete evidence exists that any abuse has occurred to the children of the group, law enforcement continues to seek placement of the children in homes that are not their own.

This leads me to the question: If this is about protecting children, why have law enforcers not kicked down the door of every Catholic church in the United States after it was revealed that there were numerous incidents of priests having molested children.

The Fourth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States is supposed to protect the citizens of this nation from unreasonable search and seizure. Had the law enforcers served a warrant on the FLDS facility and arrested the one individual who had been accused of abuse, I would not object.

However, to seize several hundred people, separating them from their parents/children is not only unreasonable, it is a gross abuse of power and the judicial system.

While I do not agree with or approve of the polygamist lifestyle, that does not give me or the justice system the right to meddle in the private lives of those who do.

I believe that our lawmakers have overstepped their boundaries by passing legislation that regulates consensual activities that occur between adults.

It is not the place of the government to legislate morality. This is the job of the church.

I would remind lawmakers and law enforcers alike that it was not so long ago that homosexuals were persecuted as well as prosecuted for their lifestyle. They were considered mentally ill by the psychiatric world. And while many still do not agree with the gay lifestyle, it has been removed from the list of "mental illnesses" and will no longer result in prosecution.

If left unchecked, how long will it be before the enforcers of law kick in the doors of your church? When will they raid the homes of parents who choose to homeschool their children?

How long will it take them to seize your firearms when a liberal president and Congress outlaw their possession?

It is past time for people to be ripped from their apathetic slumber.

Make your elected officials aware of your distaste for their encroachment on your rights and the rights of your neighbors.

After all, apathy is the greatest killer of freedom.
