Team tennis: Sweep in Amarillo pushes Permian's winning streak to four

AMARILLO Permian High School won a pair of District 2-5A team tennis dual matches Saturday, highlighted by a tense 10-9 victory against Amarillo Tascosa.

After beating Tascosa at the Austin Middle School courts, Permian (4-1 district) came back and had little trouble winning 13-6 at Amarillo High.

Against Tascosa, Permian’s boys and girls won five matches each, including undefeated days on the boys ladder from Austin Hunt, Jake Wood and Zack Webster. They all won in singles while Hunt and Webster won in boys doubles along with Wood and Nick Webster.

In girls matches, Charlotte Dawson at No. 1 and Elizabeth Espinoza at No. 6 both pulled out tight three-set victories while Tai Lucero won at No. 2 girls singles and with Dawson at No. 1 girls doubles. Carrie Lasater’s victory at No. 3 girls singles rounded out the team’s scoring.

Permian’s victory against Amarillo High was smoother, with Hunt pulling out a three-set victory at No. 1 boys singles along with a three-set win for Wood and Nick Webster at No. 1 boys doubles as part of an 8-1 effort on the boys lineup. Espinoza and Lasater also pulled out a three-setter at No. 2 girls doubles for Permian.

Now on a four-match winning streak, Permian faces a challenging week with a dual at 3:10 p.m. Tuesday at Midland High followed by home action Oct. 3 against Lubbock Coronado and Lubbock High.
