ECISD trustees return to the issue of sex education

ODESSA AMERICAN

THE STORY: About a month after examining possible new avenues of sex education that go beyond abstinence-only, ECISD trustees returned to the issue Tuesday when it revisited its current abstinence-based curriculum.

A coordinator with The Life Center of Midland gave the board a detailed look at the district’s current sex education curriculum that centers on the importance of abstinence as the only guaranteed means of preventing the possible physical, emotional and even legal drawbacks to pre-marital sex.

THE COMMENTS:
>> mojosmarty08: “It makes me laugh that they call it “y-wud-i”, as if students think it’s cool to see adults using “Text Message Lingo”.

Besides that, I am a sophomore at UTPB, so it hasn’t been so long since I went through their the Sex-Ed classes at Ector and Permian. I was never taught how to properly use contraceptives by these people. I learned through my own research from Planned Parenthood, among other things. People wonder why Ector County has one of the highest Teen Birth Rates in the nation, when the answer is obvious. Teenagers will have sex, regardless of what some stranger tells them. When you intentionally leave out contraceptives, or you downplay their effectiveness, then they won’t be used. When you use a condom, that’s 85%-98% less of a chance that you’ll get an STD over not using one. Telling someone that a condom isn’t effective, will give them the message that it’s pointless.

ECISD needs to adopt a mixed plan. I agree that abstinence is the only sure-fire way to prevent pregnancy/STDs, but I also know that it’s unrealistic. You need to be prepared.”

>> oldodessan: “Yes, it’s good to see that the same program which has made Ector County the highest and next to highest rate of STDs and teen pregnancy in the NATION will be continued.

The very definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results.

Ah well....”
