UPTON COUNTY A Midland man was killed and a Rankin man was transported to the hospital after a two-vehicle accident Thursday morning about 11 miles north of Rankin.
Jose Rolando Rodriguez, 25, was pronounced dead at the scene by Upton County Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Dorie Hord, a spokeswoman with the Texas Department of Public said.
Steven Craig Smith, 52, was transported to Medical Center Hospital, the spokeswoman said.
The accident happened at 7 a.m. on State Highway 349 and Rodriguez, driving a 2008 Ford pickup, was southbound on 349 and was attempting to pass a slower moving vehicle, the spokeswoman said. As Rodriguez was passing, he noticed a northbound vehicle approaching and took “corrective action,” and moved over to the shoulder, the spokeswoman said. Rodriguez then attempted to get back on the road off the shoulder and collided with a 2007 GMC driven by Smith, the spokeswoman said.
Both men were reported as wearing their seatbelts, the report stated.
