WINKLER COUNTY Nobody was injured in a fire that happened Friday night at a gas plant near Kermit.
A four-man crew was working at the Southern Union Gas Services plant just before 10 p.m. when the fire started. A Kermit firefighter, who declined to provide his name, said the crews “practice (fire and emergency) drills and did everything by the book.”
The fire started in the plant’s engine room but the Kermit firefighter said the cause was still under investigation.
“There was no explosion, just a fire. Everyone kept saying there was an explosion but there wasn’t,” the firefighter said.
The plant is northwest of Kermit near County Road 301 and Ranch Road 874. The fire started just before 10 p.m. Friday and was put out at about 11 p.m. Firefighters from Kermit called in the Wink Fire Department for backup.
Attempts to reach Southern Union Gas Services were unsuccessful Saturday.
