Smith’s Shoes Inc., originally Smith’s Orthopedic Shoes, Inc. opened in October 1975 at 1208 West 10th Street, Odessa. With seven years of experience in orthopedic fitting and customizing at Maeker’s Shoes in Lubbock, Howard and Vicki Smith moved their family and their dreams south to Odessa. They only carried the orthopedic shoes, as Maeker’s did. It didn’t take long to realize that in order to grow they needed to add comfort shoes.
The first company they chose was Birkenstock. They now have Birkis, Papillio and Footprints. They are all different, but very supportive for everyday, casual and vacation wear. The Birkenstocks range from size 29-49.
Their next choice was a good supportive athletic shoe that was capable of having more support added if needed for men, women and children. The styles and choices are huge. New Balance, Brooks and Asics are the core vendors. Larger sizing can be ordered in men’s.
Ten years later the store was relocated to 1809 East 8th and the name was changed to Smith’s Shoes, dropping “Orthopedic.” The name changed, but the philosophy stayed the same, providing the Permian Basin with the very best in comfort shoe wear and the expertise and service to back it up. Howard Smith is now a Certified Pedorthist, and Smith’s Shoes Inc. is the first Certified Pedorthic Facility in West Texas. Trea Smith joined the family business in 1989 and became a Certified Pedorthist in 1994. Fifteen years later, Smith’s Shoes outgrew the facility, so in 2002 Howard and Vicki built what they needed at 5101 Twin Towers Boulevard.
Through the years, more fashion comfort has been added with Clarks, Alegria, Minnetonka, Comfort Club, Johnston Murphy, Dunham, Natural Step, Finn Comfort, Think!, Mephisto, Orthaheel, Olukai, Chaco, Dansko and Fedelio, along with regular and steel toe boots from Ariat and Carolina.
